BEEF
The U.S. Census of Agriculture (2002) noted that beef cattle were located on 503 of the 713 farms in Wayne County, for a $6.7 million value.
Beef cattle convert grass - grown on "less than the best" farm land - to fine dining experiences. But they don't stop there. Cattle also provide footwear and footballs, and they contribute to medicinals, yogurt, car tires, ink, drywall, asphalt, and more.
FOREST
Approximately 700 private landowners own 232,000 acres (363 square miles) of forest land in Wayne County.
People enjoy fine furniture, houses, cook-outs, magazines and newspapers with the help of wood.
Wooden cross ties and pallets help convey almost every product we consume.
Chemicals from wood wind up in car tires, photographic film, rayon, cellophane, fuel, cleaning compounds, cosmetics, and anti-cancer drugs.
Without wood, you would hear a really different drummer. Our forest provide jobs, recreation and rest for thousands.
Priorities
Wayne County is suited to grow cattle and trees. Since people are interested in bettering their management of cattle and forests, Extension work priorities lie here.
